Will Lake Tahoe Lose Power In 2027? What The Data-Center Headline Actually Means

Liberty Utilities must replace a major wholesale electricity-supply arrangement. That is a real grid-planning challenge—but it is not an announcement that 49,000 customers will lose service.

What Is Actually Changing?

Liberty Utilities serves customers on the California side of the Lake Tahoe Basin with a combination of Liberty-owned solar generation and supplemental wholesale electricity purchased from NV Energy. Liberty says its locally owned solar resources provide 60 megawatts, while NV Energy supplies the additional power the system needs.

California Public Utilities Commission documents say NV Energy informed Liberty that it could not provide another extension of the full-service Energy Service Agreement. Liberty must arrange replacement supply after the Greenlink-West transmission project becomes operational.

Earlier regulatory documents used May 2027 as Greenlink-West's expected date. Liberty's newer customer notice says NV Energy now expects the project to enter service on December 31, 2027, with the supply transition beginning in 2028. Under the current arrangement, the agreement ends when Greenlink-West becomes operational or May 2027, whichever is later.

Were 49,000 Customers Told To Find Their Own Power?

No. The responsibility to secure replacement electricity belongs to Liberty Utilities, not to each household. The CPUC identifies approximately 49,000 electric customers in and around the California side of the Lake Tahoe Basin; that figure is a customer count, not a notice directing 49,000 residents off the grid.

Liberty states that customers will not be left without service because of the transition. NV Energy is expected to remain the transmission provider, so electricity from replacement suppliers can still travel over the interconnected transmission system into Liberty's service territory.

The CPUC has authorized Liberty to solicit replacement energy-supply and energy-management services. The final supplier mix, price, and related regulatory approvals still deserve close public attention.

Where Do Data Centers Enter The Story?

The CPUC describes Northern Nevada's electricity market as increasingly competitive because entities are seeking to add large loads, including data centers. It says transmission service is constrained for new connections and that this additional demand led NV Energy to terminate its service agreement with Liberty.

NV Energy has also said Liberty's eventual transition toward separate supply and transmission access was contemplated years before the recent data-center boom. Both facts matter: the transition had a longer history, while today's competition for generation and transmission capacity makes the replacement challenge more consequential.

How Large Is The Planned Demand?

NV Energy's 2024 Integrated Resource Plan identified 12 bundled-service data-center projects requesting 5,900 megawatts of capacity by 2033. The Desert Research Institute used those projects to model 25,590 gigawatt-hours of annual load growth following buildout and described the associated electricity and water demands as considerable.

Those figures represent requested capacity and a modeled buildout scenario. They do not guarantee that every proposed project will be completed at its full requested size. They do explain why utilities, regulators, and communities are treating large-load planning as a serious infrastructure issue.

What Does This Mean For Homeowners?

The verified conclusion is not that an individual data center caused a particular family's outage. It is that rapid large-load growth can materially affect utility procurement, transmission planning, generation requirements, and public debate over infrastructure costs.

  • Which replacement suppliers will Liberty select?
  • What will the new energy portfolio cost?
  • Will Greenlink-West and the associated transmission rights be available on schedule?
  • What consumer protections and reliability requirements will regulators impose?
  • How will Liberty communicate material changes before the transition?

These questions deserve continued reporting. They should not be replaced by the unsupported claim that 49,000 customers have been ordered to find their own electricity.

What Is A Practical Preparedness Response?

Household backup power remains useful for actual outage risks, including storms, equipment failures, wildfire-related Public Safety Power Shutoffs, and other service interruptions. A portable power station or solar-generator system is not a replacement for continuous utility service, and this supply transition alone is not a reason for panic buying.

A sensible plan starts with essential loads, their running and startup requirements, a realistic reserve duration, and official utility notices. Refrigeration, communications, medical equipment, pumps, and safe lighting should be planned from actual requirements rather than a frightening headline.
