What Actually Happened?
On July 28, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission added foreign-produced connected power inverters to its Covered List. The action followed a national-security determination concerning supply chains, remote connectivity, cybersecurity, and critical infrastructure.
The FCC described the covered category according to where the equipment is produced, regardless of the company's nationality. The word connected is also important: the agency's concerns focus on devices whose communications and remote-update capabilities could create additional avenues for disruption or unauthorized access.
What Does The Restriction Do?
New covered inverter models generally cannot receive the FCC equipment authorization needed before most electronic devices can be imported, marketed, or sold in the United States. A producer may still seek Conditional Approval through the federal process described by the FCC.
This is more precise than saying that every foreign-made inverter was suddenly removed from the market. The immediate restriction applies to new device models seeking authorization after the Covered List update.
Does This Affect Existing Equipment?
The FCC says the action does not prohibit the continued import, marketing, sale, or use of inverter models that were previously authorized. It also does not require consumers to stop using devices they already purchased.
The agency separately granted a waiver allowing already-authorized covered power inverters to continue receiving qualifying software, firmware, security, functionality, and compatibility updates through at least January 1, 2029.
Are Solar Generators Being Banned?
No. The FCC did not announce that every portable power station or solar generator currently sold in the United States is illegal.
Solar generators commonly contain an inverter, but whether a future product is affected depends on the exact model, its connectivity, where it is produced, and its authorization status. The new action primarily changes the path for future covered models—not the legal status of equipment already sitting in someone's home.

There is no reason to panic, replace working equipment, or rush into a purchase. Continue evaluating the exact model and the ownership details that affect its usefulness in your home.

- Review warranty coverage and U.S. support
- Check replacement parts, accessories, and software-support expectations

The FCC action addresses future authorization, cybersecurity, and supply-chain risk. It does not establish that every previously authorized foreign-produced inverter is unsafe.
What Could Change Next?
Previously authorized products should reduce immediate disruption. Over time, the policy may affect which new inverter and solar-generator models reach the U.S. market. Manufacturers may seek Conditional Approval, adjust supply chains, or move production.
